Lodge Farm Alpacas

We are John and Kellie and we live at the farm  with our 3 boys. John has farmed all his life, previously in dairy. He now has a beef herd.
We bought the alpacas at the start of 2023 not knowing much about them at all but knew that they would be the best additions to our farming family. We have learnt that they are very laid back, unassuming, inquisitive  and cheeky.. they all have different characters and varying styles of hair and teeth! Their fleeces are beautiful. The alpacas are all males. Pablo, Paco, Diego, Sonny, Carlos and Cole. We have 3 new additions that came to the family in February 2024 - Dash,Duncan and Roberto.  They are herding animals and are never far away from each other. They seem to love being walked and are easy to manage. They can however be stubborn and they like to do things on their own terms .. this means that on walks they can just stop in their tracks and even sit down! but they soon move on if they think they’re being left behind !

Home: FAQ

Are we licensed and insured

Yes. Lodge  Farm is insured and has public liability for our visitors. Lodge Farm Alpacas is a licensed activity and council approved. The alpacas are vet checked and deemed in good health when walking. Any signs of illness or injury and the alpaca will not be walked and we will take the appropriate steps and support

Do the alpacas bite or kick or spit

Our alpacas do not bite however, with animals, this is always a possibility. To reassure you as best as we can we can tell you that alpacas have only 2 teeth and a palette which makes it hard to bite They tend to nibble softly and when feeding out of your hand you will feel a light tickle rather than any signs of a bite. The alpacas are gentle and are very used to being around children and adults.
Our alpacas do not spit at people. However they can and do spit at each other. This tends to be when they are eating and it’s a little sign to each other to say back off that’s mine! The spit is more like a puff of cold air but can be regurgitated grass. Rarely, you  can be caught in the cross fire when feeding but all efforts will be made to avoid that
Our alpacas don’t tend to kick but they can if they feel threatened or scared. If they do kick it generally does not hurt but can be a shock.
The general rule around alpacas is that you do not stand near their back legs and try to stay at the side of them. Alpacas like to see you and don’t like you being behind them out of sight. They don’t like you bending down near their back legs. Alpacas don’t like loud noises so we ask that you do not shout or scream/make loud noises as this will scare them. Alpacas love their necks and backs being stroked but they don’t like stroking on their faces and top of their heads. Alpacas pick up on your vibe and will be comforted if you are calm and gentle with them.

What should I wear?

The weather will determine what you wear. But some essential tips are: Wear wellies - Whatever the weather we are walking through fields and there are always wet areas. Wear suitable clothing -if it’s hot wear something cool but you may want your legs and arms covered if you know you get irritated by bites, grass .. Put sun cream on if the sun is out as it can get very hot in the fields. Wear water proofs for your own comfort if it’s raining. Layer up if it’s cold and you can remove clothing if you get too warm

What can I expect from this experience ?

Fun, happiness and a relaxing time. The alpacas are such calm animals and will respond to your positive vibes making your walk and general experience an enjoyable one. You should be able to take plenty of selfies and photos with the alpacas. The  alpacas generally love a cuddle and will allow you to stroke their necks and backs.  You will have the opportunity when you arrive to familiarise yourself with the alpacas, hand feed them and ask any questions that you have that the guide hasn't covered for you.
Saying that be prepared for any possibility! Alpacas are very easy going but, like us all, they can be very stubborn and do what they want at times which requires some patience, encouragement and laughter

What happens in extreme weather conditions?

If the conditions are considered to be dangerous or not enjoyable the walk will be cancelled by the guide and you will have the opportunity to reschedule.
Should a situation occur whilst walking the guide will take the appropriate action to bring the walk to an end as quickly as possible and ensure everybody’s safety including the alpacas
